Red Velvet Hot Cacao for Immune Strength

I made the BEST drink this morning and I can't wait for you to try it. I am firm believer that the heatlhiest food and drinks are the ones you make at home. Even if all you eat is pizza, mac and cheese and ice cream, if you are making them from scratch, at home you are doing way better than the processed, mass-produced versions of them.

Anyway, this sounds and tastes like a fancy drink but you can totally make this at home! Valentines day is coming up!

I added a few herbs to support immune health --who doesn't need that these days?

Astragalus builds defensive qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In our western world, we say it is an immune strengthener, best taken regularly over time.

A little pinch of echinacea goes a long way. A good echinacea should be potent, leaving a tingling on your tongue, so don't over do it.

Marshmallow root powder is added to create some smooth texture and to moisten our tissues, keeping the mucousal layer healthy. Much of our immune system is along these mucus tissues like the throat, nasal cavities, and GI system.

Hemp seeds provide TONS of nutrients, fiber and healthy fats. One of the most important minerals it provides is Magnesium, which most Americans are deplete in. You need magnesium for proper muscle function, cardiovascular health, during periods of stress (hello 2020 and 2021), and for vitamin D production. Just 3 tablespoons a day provide 45% of your RDA (recommended daily allowance). They also blend up nice and smooth!

AND I am being more aware of how much sugar I am getting in my diet. I used to add honey or maple syrup (and you can still do that!) but these days I am using whole dates (not date syrup) as my primary sweetener in baking and drinks like this. A whole date provides sweetness and minerals and vitamins and fiber.

Red Velvet Hot Cacao

1 cup warm water
1 tbsp fair-trade, organic raw cacao
1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
1 tbsp hemp seeds
1tsp beet powder
1/2 tsp marshmallow powder
1/2 tsp echinacea powder
1/2 tsp astragalus powder
1-2 dates with pit removed
1 tsp cacao butter
1 cup hot water

Put all the ingredients (except hot water because we dont want the hot water to melt the plastic pitcher) in a high power blender, like a BlendTec, VitaMix or Ninja. Run for 90 seconds or more to get the drink smooth and creamy. Pour 1/2 into two small mugs and top with 1/2 cup hot water each.
